A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a deposit you lock in at a fixed interest rate for a set term. Your principal is guaranteed.

GIC vs HISA
HISA is flexible but rate can change. GIC locks your money but offers a higher guaranteed rate. Use HISA for emergency funds; GIC for money you won't need for 1–5 years.

Non-registered: interest is taxable. Inside TFSA: tax-free growth. Inside RRSP: tax-deferred. If you have TFSA room, a TFSA GIC is usually the better choice.
